Bobi Wine has marked six years since the formation of the National Unity Platform (NUP) with a reflective prayer, acknowledging both the party’s milestones and the challenges it has faced since inception.
In a statement on Wednesday, July 22, released to supporters on the anniversary, the NUP president struck a solemn tone, thanking God for what he described as “every blessing, every victory and every insight” that has guided the party through a turbulent political journey.
“The journey thus far has been filled with tears, relentless setbacks, heartaches, and roadblocks, and yet you have been with us through it all. THANK YOU,” he said.
The former presidential candidate also used the moment to seek forgiveness for what he termed moments of self-reliance over faith.
“Forgive us where we have fallen short, especially those times when we have sought to rely on our own abilities and not looked up to you,” Bobi Wine added.
His message underscored a spiritual dimension to NUP’s political messaging, blending activism with calls for moral renewal and national unity.
The prayer-like statement also highlighted the human cost of political contestation in Uganda.
“We place into your hands the souls of those we have lost and pray that you give strength to those who have been injured, those in detention, and those who are missing. Give grace to their families,” he said.
The NUP leader further placed the party’s future “in God’s hands,” reiterating his long-standing call for a “New Uganda,” a phrase central to the party’s reform agenda.
“Victory is our desire — a New Uganda our ultimate goal. Be with us till we get there,” he stated.
Bobi Wine also asked for “wisdom, fortitude and courage” for party leaders and members at all levels, including himself, as they continue to mobilise support across the country.
He concluded with a broader prayer for Uganda and its citizens.
The anniversary comes at a time when Uganda’s opposition remains under pressure, with NUP leaders frequently raising concerns over arrests, restrictions on political activity, and alleged human rights violations.
Despite these challenges, the party continues to position itself as a key political force, particularly among young voters.
Formed in 2020 ahead of the general elections, NUP quickly rose to prominence under Bobi Wine’s leadership, becoming the main opposition platform in Uganda.
Six years on, the anniversary message reflects both its enduring struggles and its continued ambition to reshape the country’s political landscape.
