Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura has sharply criticised the treatment of lawyer and political figure Erias Lukwago after his appearance in court on Thursday, July 16, describing the circumstances as “inhumane” and unjustified given his reported health condition.

Lukwago, who was presented before court under tight security, appeared visibly frail, according to accounts from the courtroom.

Armed officers surrounded him as he was escorted in chains, a move that has triggered concern among his supporters and sections of the opposition.

Reacting shortly after the court session, Nyanjura questioned the necessity of the security measures, arguing that Lukwago’s physical state did not warrant such handling.

“He is too weak to even walk or talk, yet they still chain him and surround him with heavily armed officers,” she said.

She further raised concerns over Lukwago’s health, claiming that his deteriorating condition had not been adequately considered in the legal process.

“Now he has been committed to the High Court for trial, while his failing medical condition has been completely ignored,” Nyanjura added.

The former city leader also cast doubt on the justification for restraining Lukwago, posing a rhetorical question on whether he posed any flight risk.

“Can Erias Lukwago, in his state, even run away if he were not chained?” she asked.

Court officials confirmed that Lukwago has now been committed to the High Court for trial, marking the next phase of the legal proceedings against him.
