Concerns over the health of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago have intensified after opposition leaders visited him at Luzira Murchison Bay Prison, a day after a court denied him bail despite reported illness.
National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Rubongoya on Wednesday said Lukwago’s condition appeared visibly deteriorated, warning that continued detention could put his life at risk.
Lukwago, a senior lawyer and prominent opposition figure, had earlier pleaded with the court to grant him bail on medical grounds, but the request was rejected.
Rubongoya, who visited the detained politician in prison, described the situation as alarming and called for urgent intervention to allow Lukwago access to specialized treatment.
“This morning at Luzira Murchison Bay prison, we checked on Hon. Erias Lukwago and delivered to him our message of solidarity and support as he goes through these very hard times,” Rubongoya said.
He added that Lukwago’s physical condition raised serious humanitarian concerns, questioning the justification for his continued detention under such circumstances.
“Even by looking at him and listening to the agonising pain he is in, he has no business being in prison unless the intention is to kill him. He urgently needs to access advanced medical attention,” he stated.
The remarks come amid growing criticism from opposition figures and human rights advocates, who argue that the judiciary should prioritize health considerations in bail decisions, especially in cases involving severe illness.
Rubongoya urged the courts to exercise discretion and uphold constitutional principles, emphasizing the need for compassion in administering justice.
“This is the most deserving case for the judiciary to live to their oath and temper justice with mercy,” he said.
