Outspoken scholar and activist Stella Nyanzi has welcomed the release on bail of former Ethics and Integrity Minister Dr. Miria Matembe, framing the development as both a moment of relief and a signal to intensify resistance against state pressure.
Reacting shortly after the court ruling on Wednesday, Nyanzi struck a defiant tone, celebrating Matembe’s freedom while warning that the struggle is far from over.
“Bail granted! Adjournment to 19th August. Tonight we dance for joy a little with Dr Miria Matembe. Tomorrow, we return to the frontline to attack our oppressors by speaking truth to power. We shall never surrender!” she said.
Matembe, 73, secured bail from the Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Luzira after spending days in detention on charges of promoting sectarianism.
Her release followed an earlier setback where she had been denied bail and remanded, despite pleading with the court to consider her deteriorating health and advanced age.
The case has attracted widespread attention, with opposition leaders and civil society actors questioning both the circumstances of her arrest and the broader use of sectarianism laws.
Critics argue that such charges are increasingly being used to silence dissenting voices, particularly those critical of government actions.
Nyanzi’s reaction underscores growing frustration among activists, many of whom view Matembe’s prosecution as politically charged.
While her release on bail has been welcomed, it has not eased concerns about freedom of expression and the treatment of government critics.
The court adjourned the case to August 19, 2026, when Matembe is expected to return for further proceedings. Details of her bail terms were not immediately disclosed, but she is required to comply with court conditions as the case continues.
For now, Matembe’s release offers temporary relief to her supporters.
