The National Unity Platform (NUP) has renewed concerns over the continued detention of its supporters, following a visit by Secretary General David Rubongoya to Luzira Women's Prison.
In a statement, Rubongoya said he checked on three party supporters—Olivia Lutaaya, Doreen Kaija and Sauda Madaada—who remain in custody.
“This morning at Luzira Women’s Prison, we checked on our comrades Olivia Lutaaya, Doreen Kaija and Sauda Madaada,” Rubongoya said.
He claimed that two of the detainees were forced into plea bargains despite maintaining their innocence.
“Faced with great uncertainty, Olivia and Sauda were pushed to pleading guilty to crimes they did not commit in order to regain freedom,” he said. “They were subsequently sentenced and should be coming out in a few months.”
Rubongoya added that Kaija had declined a plea deal and would continue to challenge the charges in court.
“Kaija is part of those who have not taken the plea bargain route—choosing instead to pursue all legal remedies and fight for her innocence,” he said.
He noted that the party’s legal team is still pursuing the matter.
“Our legal team continues to do their best in the pursuit of their freedom,” Rubongoya stated.
The visit also highlighted the length of time some supporters have spent in detention. According to Rubongoya, Lutaaya said she has been in custody for most of the party’s existence.
“Olivia Lutaaya reminded us that out of the six years of the National Unity Platform she has only been free for one year. She has spent the remaining five years in detention,” he said.
He added that the detainee described the emotional strain of her situation, especially after following recent party events.
“She told us that yesterday was particularly difficult for her as she watched the #6yearsOfNUP commemoration on TV and reflected on the grave injustice occasioned to her and many others,” Rubongoya said.
Rubongoya said the detainees expressed appreciation for continued support from supporters.
“They’re all very grateful to all those who check on them, support their families and continuously push for their freedom,” he added.
