Minister for Local Government Balaam Ateenyi has called on religious leaders to take a frontline role in Uganda’s anti-corruption campaign, using a thanksgiving service in Masindi to emphasise the Church’s influence in shaping accountable leadership.
Ateenyi made the remarks on Sunday at St. Matthew’s Cathedral during a service held to mark his recent appointment to Cabinet and the first anniversary of Rt. Rev. Kugonza as Bishop of Masindi.
The event brought together Anglican bishops, clergy, and hundreds of faithful, including Emeritus Archbishop Stanley Ntagali.
“I call upon the faith community to remain steadfast in supporting the ‘Expose the Corrupt’ campaign,” Ateenyi said.
“This is in line with our shared commitment to accountability, integrity, and service to the people.”
The minister framed the anti-graft drive as a collective responsibility, urging citizens to work closely with institutions to promote transparency and improve service delivery.
“Corruption undermines the very foundation of service delivery and erodes public trust,” he added.
“The Church has the moral authority to guide communities in rejecting corruption and promoting ethical leadership.”
The service also featured the presentation of a new Toyota Land Cruiser to Bishop Kugonza, a donation from President Yoweri Museveni.
Ateenyi said the gesture symbolised recognition of the Church’s role in national development.
“I had the honour of presenting a brand new vehicle, gifted by the President, as a token of appreciation for the Church’s continued commitment to moral values, unity, and community service,” he said.
Religious leaders at the event welcomed the government’s engagement, noting that collaboration between the Church and State remains key in addressing governance challenges.
The gathering also marked one year since Bishop Kugonza’s enthronement, with speakers commending his leadership and contribution to spiritual and community development in Masindi Diocese.
Ateenyi concluded by thanking congregants for their support and reaffirming his commitment to a values-driven leadership agenda.
“I extend my gratitude to the Christian faithful for their overwhelming turnout and continued moral support,” he said. “May God bless our leaders and our nation as we work together to expose corruption and build a better Uganda.”
