National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Rubongoya has said detained party leaders at Kitalya Mini-Max Prison remain in high spirits despite their continued incarceration.
Rubongoya said he visited the facility to check on NUP Deputy President Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, party supporter Mugumya Gaddafi and Wakabi Grace Smart.
In a statement, Rubongoya said the three detainees remained optimistic and maintained that they had committed no wrongdoing.
“We were back to Kitalya Mini-Max Prison today, where we checked on Deputy President Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, comrade Mugumya Gaddafi and comrade Wakabi Grace Smart,” Rubongoya said.
He added that the detainees were encouraged by the belief that their political activities were motivated by the desire for a better Uganda.
“Their spirits are strong, for they know as we all do that they are innocent of any wrong-doing,” he said.
Rubongoya described their continued detention as part of difficult times for the party and its supporters, while appealing to Ugandans to continue standing with those in custody.
He said the detainees had expressed appreciation to citizens who had supported them during their incarceration.
“They appreciate all citizens who continue to stand with them in these very challenging times,” Rubongoya added.
The latest visit comes amid continued attention on NUP members and opposition figures facing legal and political challenges in Uganda.
The party has repeatedly raised concerns over the treatment of its supporters and leaders, arguing that some of those detained are being targeted because of their political activities.
Government authorities have, however, maintained that individuals facing criminal proceedings must answer to the allegations against them through established legal processes.
Kitalya Mini-Max Prison, located in Wakiso District, is among Uganda's high-security correctional facilities and has held several high-profile detainees.
Rubongoya's statement is likely to renew discussions about the treatment of opposition supporters ahead of Uganda's broader political activities, with NUP continuing to mobilise its supporters around calls for political change and accountability.
