President Yoweri Museveni has commissioned 280 officer cadets at Kabamba, urging the newly trained officers to uphold discipline, protect wealth creators and serve the country with honour.

Museveni congratulated the cadets on completing their training and acknowledged the role played by their families and the leadership of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) in preparing them for military service.

In a statement following the commissioning ceremony, the president said Uganda's defence capabilities depended on more than military strength, emphasising the importance of economic development, technological investment and regional cooperation.

“A strong defence requires a strong economy, well trained soldiers, investment in science and technology, and cooperation with our brother African countries,” Museveni said.

He added that the military had a responsibility to protect wealth creators and help combat crime and sabotage within communities.

The president's remarks underscored his position that national security and economic development were closely linked, with the military expected to contribute to an environment that allows businesses and other productive activities to thrive.

### Museveni Praises UPDF Leadership on Corruption

Museveni also praised the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and other UPDF commanders for efforts to fight corruption within the military and improve the welfare of serving personnel.

He said corruption was particularly damaging because it directly affected the living conditions and well-being of soldiers.

“I am following the improvements in barracks and pay, but the fight against corruption is especially important because it directly affects the welfare of our men and women in uniform,” he stated.

The president's comments placed renewed emphasis on accountability within the military, particularly in the management of resources intended to support personnel and improve their working and living conditions.

Improving barracks and remuneration has remained an important aspect of military welfare, with Museveni indicating that he was monitoring progress in these areas.

His remarks also signalled that commanders were expected to ensure resources allocated to the force translated into tangible improvements for soldiers.

### Message to Newly Commissioned Officers

Museveni urged the 280 newly commissioned officers to maintain discipline and build strong relationships with the communities they are expected to serve.

He reminded them that their responsibilities extended beyond military duties to include serving the country and maintaining the trust of the public.

“To the new officers, remain disciplined, stay close to the people and serve Uganda with honour,” he said.

The commissioning marks another addition to Uganda's military officer corps as the UPDF continues to prepare personnel for national defence and security responsibilities.

Museveni's message highlighted discipline, accountability, economic protection and public service as key expectations for the newly commissioned officers.
