Bobi Wine has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of more than 20 pupils from King David Junior School, describing the incident as a devastating loss to families and the nation.

In a statement issued after the Thursday night crash in Kapchorwa, eastern Uganda, the National Unity Platform (NUP) president said he was “very, very saddened” by the deaths of the young learners who had been returning from an educational tour.

The pupils were travelling back to Kampala after visiting Sipi Falls when their school bus reportedly lost control along the Kapchorwa–Mbale road, veered off, and overturned.

Preliminary reports indicate that at least 20 children died on the spot, alongside an adult believed to be the school owner. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities.

“One cannot imagine how broken their parents are by this tragedy,” Bobi Wine said, extending condolences to the bereaved families, classmates, and teachers affected by the crash.

He described the deceased pupils as “little angels” and prayed for strength for all those impacted, while also wishing survivors a quick recovery.

The accident has sent shockwaves across Uganda, with leaders and citizens expressing grief over what is now considered one of the deadliest school transport incidents in recent years.

Rescue efforts involved police, emergency responders, and local residents who worked through the night to retrieve victims from the wreckage.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the cause of the crash, with early indications pointing to possible driver error or mechanical failure on the steep stretch of road.

Bobi Wine’s message adds to growing calls for improved road safety measures, particularly concerning school transport and long-distance trips involving children.

The tragedy has also reignited debate over vehicle inspection standards and driver accountability.
