Newly appointed acting president of the National Unity Platform (NUP), John Baptist Nambeshe, has pledged to uphold party values and strengthen unity following his elevation to the role by party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.

In a statement issued shortly after the announcement, Nambeshe expressed gratitude to Bobi Wine for entrusting him with the responsibility, describing the appointment as both an honour and a call to serve during a critical period for the opposition party.

“Thank you for placing your trust in me with this appointment. I am deeply honored to step into the role of Acting Party President,” Nambeshe said, adding that the confidence shown in his leadership was “humbling and inspiring.”

The Manjiya County legislator takes over from Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru, who has served as acting president for the past four months.

During her tenure, Zedriga oversaw party activities and maintained mobilisation efforts across key regions, earning recognition from the party leadership.

Nambeshe paid tribute to his predecessor, crediting her with laying a strong foundation for continuity.

“I want to express my profound gratitude to our outgoing Acting President Dr Lina Zedriga Waru. Thank you for your exceptional service, committed leadership, and unwavering dedication to our movement,” he said.

He noted that her contribution had positioned the party to sustain its agenda and internal cohesion, particularly at a time when NUP continues to navigate political pressure and organisational demands.

As he assumes office, Nambeshe outlined his priorities, emphasising unity within party ranks and a commitment to advancing NUP’s objectives.

He said he would work closely with the party leadership, including the secretariat headed by Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, as well as members and supporters across the country.

“I commit to upholding our party’s core values, fostering unity, and driving our shared agenda forward,” he stated.

The leadership transition forms part of NUP’s broader internal structure, where regional deputy presidents take on acting roles to ensure continuity in leadership.

Political observers note that such arrangements are designed to maintain stability and organisational effectiveness within the party.

Nambeshe now assumes the position at a time when Uganda’s opposition remains focused on strengthening grassroots support and consolidating its political base ahead of future engagements.

His leadership is expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s immediate direction and coordination efforts.
