Opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), has announced a leadership transition, with Eastern Region Deputy President John Baptist Nambeshe appointed as the new acting party president.

The move comes after Northern Region Deputy President Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru completed a four-month stint at the helm.

In a statement, NUP president Bobi Wine commended Zedriga for her stewardship during a period he described as critical for the party’s internal stability and mobilization efforts.

He noted that she had “steered the party well and kept the revolution alive,” underscoring her role in maintaining cohesion within the opposition outfit.

Zedriga had assumed the acting role amid ongoing political activities and organizational restructuring within NUP.

Her tenure saw continued grassroots engagement and sustained party visibility, particularly in northern Uganda, a region where the party has been working to strengthen its support base.

With her term now concluded, Bobi Wine announced that Nambeshe would take over in an acting capacity. Nambeshe, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Manjiya County, has been a key figure within NUP’s eastern Uganda leadership structures and is seen as an experienced mobilizer.

“I wish him well and request all leaders and comrades to accord him the necessary support,” Bobi Wine said, signaling the party’s expectation for a smooth transition and unity among its ranks.

The leadership rotation reflects NUP’s internal arrangement of delegating responsibilities across its regional deputies, a structure designed to maintain operational continuity in the absence of the party president.

Nambeshe now assumes the role at a time when opposition parties in Uganda continue to navigate a complex political environment, marked by heightened scrutiny and organizational challenges.

His immediate task will be to sustain party momentum, coordinate national activities, and reinforce NUP’s presence across key regions.
