National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine has thrown his weight behind Ugandan diplomat Olara Otunnu’s bid to become the next United Nations Secretary-General, praising his record on human rights, peace and the protection of vulnerable populations.
In a statement, Wine described Otunnu as an “illustrious son” of Uganda whose decades of international service had earned him respect both at home and abroad. He said Otunnu’s experience at the United Nations demonstrated the kind of leadership the international community needs amid ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises.
Wine particularly highlighted Otunnu’s work advocating for children affected by armed conflict, saying his commitment to human rights and justice made him suitable for the UN’s top diplomatic position.
“True leadership is measured by integrity, vision, and an unwavering dedication to peace and justice,” Wine said, expressing his solidarity with the former UN official.
However, the NUP leader also used the occasion to revisit Otunnu’s previous attempts to secure Uganda’s endorsement for the UN position. Wine accused President Yoweri Museveni’s government of having previously denied Otunnu support because of his criticism of alleged human rights abuses in Uganda.
He suggested that Otunnu’s international career could have taken a different trajectory had Uganda backed him at the time, arguing that his leadership might have contributed to a fairer and more peaceful world.
Wine also acknowledged concerns among Ugandans over the government’s decision to endorse Otunnu’s candidature now. He said such scepticism was understandable given what he described as the regime’s treatment of political opponents and citizens demanding greater freedoms.
Despite those concerns, Wine urged Ugandans to judge Otunnu by his longstanding record and principles. He said the diplomat’s commitment to speaking about Uganda’s challenges gave him confidence that Otunnu would not ignore the country’s democratic struggles if elected UN Secretary-General.
Wine further praised Otunnu’s call for reform of international institutions, saying the UN should move beyond being dominated by major-power interests and instead become a stronger instrument for equality, accountability and shared prosperity.
The NUP leader concluded by wishing Otunnu success as he takes Uganda’s aspirations to the international stage, offering his “full solidarity and prayers” to the veteran diplomat.
