National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine has mourned party youth leader Paul Musoke, who died at the age of 27 after sustaining severe injuries in an attack on his home.
Musoke reportedly suffered serious burns after his house was set on fire last week in circumstances that NUP leaders have described as a deliberate attack.
He was rescued by neighbours and rushed to hospital, where he remained under treatment until his death.
In a statement mourning the young activist, Wine described Musoke as a committed member of the opposition movement who had devoted himself to the party and its activities.
“Paul Musoke was a young patriot. A committed foot soldier. A disciplined youth leader who went through the National Unity Platform School of Leadership,” Wine said.
Wine said Musoke’s death followed an attack on his home in which the door was allegedly secured from the outside before the house was set ablaze.
“Last week, Paul's house was attacked. Its door was closed from outside before being set on fire. He sustained severe injuries before being rushed to hospital by the neighbours,” he said.
According to Wine, Musoke battled his injuries for several days but ultimately succumbed despite efforts to save his life.
“Despite every effort, Paul did not make it. Yesterday evening, he passed on at only 27 years of age. Such a tragic loss,” Wine said.
The NUP leader said Musoke’s death was part of a wider pattern of fatalities involving opposition supporters, while accusing authorities of failing to ensure accountability in previous cases.
“Paul joins our countless comrades and supporters who have died under the most painful, brutal circumstances. In almost all cases, perpetrators of these crimes are never brought to book,” Wine said.
Wine called for justice for the deceased activist and urged that those responsible for the attack be held accountable.
“Paul deserves justice. Fare thee well comrade,” he said.
Musoke’s death is expected to deepen concerns among opposition supporters over the safety of political activists in Uganda.
However, the circumstances surrounding the fire, including the identity and motive of the alleged attackers, remain subject to investigation.
