President Yoweri Museveni has granted an official burial to former Minister of Gender and Kumi Member of Parliament Albina Opio, according to Minister in Charge of the Presidency Milly Babalanda.

Babalanda announced the decision in a statement, saying the government had recognised Opio’s contribution during her time in public service. Opio served as a member of Uganda’s Fifth Parliament and previously held the position of Minister of Gender.

“Dear friends, I wish to inform you that the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Gen. @KagutaMuseveni, has granted an official burial to the fallen former Minister of Gender and Kumi Member of Parliament during Uganda’s Fifth Parliament, Hon. Albina Opio,” Babalanda stated.

The minister said the National Organising Committee (NOC) had begun discussions with Opio’s family to coordinate the arrangements for her final send-off.

“Accordingly, the N.O.C are engaging with the bereaved family to organise a befitting send-off for the late Hon. Albina Opio,” she added.

An official burial in Uganda involves the state playing a role in organising and facilitating funeral arrangements for individuals recognised for their service to the country. The decision is typically communicated through government authorities, with arrangements coordinated alongside the deceased person’s family.

Opio’s death has brought together former colleagues from government and Parliament, as well as residents of Kumi, who are expected to participate in the funeral arrangements.

Babalanda extended her condolences to Opio’s family, friends and former colleagues, while also acknowledging the people of Kumi and Ugandans who have mourned the former legislator.

“Our deepest condolences go to the family, friends, former colleagues in Government and Parliament, the people of Kumi, and Ugandans at large,” Babalanda said.

She concluded her message by paying tribute to the former minister, asking that she be remembered for her public service and contribution to Uganda during her political career.

“May the soul of Hon. Albina Opio rest in eternal peace,” Babalanda said.

The government’s engagement with the bereaved family is expected to pave the way for the official funeral programme and other arrangements for Opio’s burial.
