President Yoweri Museveni has urged National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders to return to what he described as the party’s “correct methods” by strengthening grassroots engagement and monitoring government programmes.

Museveni made the remarks on Friday, October 2, while addressing the NRM Parliamentary Caucus at Kololo in Kampala, where he challenged leaders to ensure government initiatives deliver tangible benefits to ordinary Ugandans.

The President particularly pointed to the Parish Development Model (PDM), saying NRM leaders should follow up its implementation and ensure resources and programmes reach the intended beneficiaries.

“This is why PDM must reach the people,” Museveni said, stressing the responsibility of political leaders to monitor government interventions at community level.

He also renewed his directive on the protection of Uganda’s wetlands, ordering people occupying protected wetland areas to leave.

“Those occupying them must get out,” Museveni said, while outlining alternative economic activities for communities that will be affected by the enforcement measures.

He said residents in Busoga, Bukedi and Kigezi would be supported to transition into fish farming. According to Museveni, the initiative would provide alternative sources of income while supporting access to water for irrigation.

The President has previously linked wetland protection to Uganda’s agricultural and environmental priorities, with his administration also pushing for greater use of irrigation to reduce dependence on rainfall.

Museveni further turned his attention to the country’s economic outlook, saying Uganda’s economy was projected to grow by 10.4 percent.

The 10.4 percent projection is contained in the government’s medium-term economic outlook for the 2026/27 financial year, with oil and gas production expected to be among the major drivers of expansion.

The government has also identified commercial agriculture, industrialisation, services and digital transformation as key areas for accelerating economic growth.

Museveni urged NRM leaders to build on the anticipated growth by increasing efforts in these sectors.

“We must now build on this progress by intensifying commercial agriculture, industry, ICT and services,” he said.

The President concluded his message with a biblical reference, saying Uganda’s economic progress would depend on the actions taken by its leaders and citizens.

“As the Bible says, you reap what you sow,” Museveni said.
