Busoga Kingdom has joined the people of Tooro in mourning the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, with Busoga’s King William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Gabula Nadiope describing the late monarch as a visionary traditional leader whose influence extended beyond his kingdom.
In a condolence message, King Gabula said the people of Busoga stood with the Royal Family and the entire Tooro Kingdom during what he described as a period of profound grief.
“The people of Busoga and I join the Royal Family and the people of Tooro Kingdom in mourning the passing of His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV,” Gabula said.
He paid tribute to King Oyo’s leadership, highlighting his humility and commitment to preserving Tooro’s cultural heritage while connecting with younger generations.
According to Gabula, the late King left a lasting mark through his efforts to protect traditional values while inspiring a new generation of Ugandans.
“His Majesty was one of the visionary traditional leaders of our time, whose leadership, humility and commitment to preserving culture while inspiring a new generation left a lasting mark on Tooro, Uganda and beyond,” he said.
King Oyo died at the age of 34 after reportedly receiving medical treatment in the United States. He ascended the Tooro throne in 1995 at the age of three following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, becoming internationally recognised as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
He later assumed full responsibilities as King after turning 18 and remained an important cultural figure in Uganda, where traditional leaders play a significant role in preserving heritage and representing the interests of their communities.
King Gabula said Uganda had lost an important voice and distinguished cultural leader whose contribution would continue to be remembered.
“In Omukama Oyo, Uganda has lost an important voice and a distinguished cultural leader whose legacy will endure for generations,” he said.
He extended his thoughts and prayers to the Royal Family and the people of Tooro, describing King Oyo as a beloved monarch and guiding force.
“May His Majesty’s soul rest in eternal peace,” Gabula said.
